Easter Hemp Cross Buns

Easter is just around the corner and hot cross buns may be hard to find!!  Do not despair,  this yummy home baking is easy and delicious!!
It is so very therapeutic filling the house with the delicious aroma of classic hot cross buns.
Adding nutritious hemp protein powder and hemp hearts, make these buns a yummy treat.

Shopping list

4tsp      Sure bake yeast 4tsp
450g     White flour
½ tbsp  Sea/himalayan salt
2 tbsp   Milk powder
6 tbsp   Butter
3 tbsp   Brown sugar
30g       Hemp protein powder
30g       Hemp seed hearts
1 tbsp   Spray free orange rind
3 tsp     Allspice
250ml  Water
¾ cup Sultanas

Cross ingredients

½ cup Plain Flower
2 tbsp Hemp seed oil
50 – 70ml Water to mix as required for consistency
1         Egg medium-size

For the glaze:

3 tbsp   Boiling water
3 tbsp   Castor sugar


  1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl or mixer
  2. Divide the dough into 10 or 12 equal portions, roll each portion into a bowl and rest for 20 minutes
  3. Shape into a smooth ball but gently rolling and placed on a baking tray
  4. Cover and leave to rise in a warm place (30°C – 35°C) for about 30 minutes until they have doubled in size,
  5. Put the crosses on the dough before baking:
  6. Mix flour and oil together and add a little water time to form a squeezable paste
  7. Place in a piping bag or use a plastic bag with the corner cut off,
  8. Bake in a preheated oven on 200°c for 15 to 25 minutes until golden brown remove from oven
  9. Mix sugar and hot water together and brush the buns with the glaze when they are still hot
